Exploring “One More, One Less” (Math)

This week , our young learners deepened their number sense by exploring the concepts of one more and one less through an engaging Play-Doh activity. Using their hands to shape and count Play-Doh pieces, students interacted with numbers in a fun, tactile way that supported IB’s inquiry-based approach.

Through play, they discovered how numbers change when we add or take away one, building a strong foundation for future mathematical thinking. It was wonderful to see the children confidently experimenting, asking questions, and making meaningful connections.

A simple game—full of rich learning!

Kindergarten(Koala Class)

Creating their own story  “The Scary Halloween” (Literacy)

The students of Koala Class applied their UOI learning in a meaningful and creative way. Building on the titles, characters, and settings they developed yesterday, each child crafted original sentences and completed their own short story—“The Scary Halloween.”

Through this activity, students connected ideas, expressed their creativity, and demonstrated their growing confidence as storytellers. It was a wonderful example of how inquiry and imagination come together in an IB classroom.

First Grade(Tiger Class)

When the “Green-Light Monster” Meets the Health Guards (UOI)

This week, fluorescent-green mini-bookshelves appeared in the school lobby, unveiling the Tigers’ final project: an original comic promoting healthy habits. In the story, a mysterious “green light” captures kids with poor habits—no handwashing, no toothbrushing, too many snacks. Hero Kaia uncovers the pattern, rescues her friends, and shows everyone that good habits are the real superpower.

To spread the message, the Tigers delivered comics to every classroom, teachers read them aloud, a jumbo edition was donated to the library, and extra copies were placed on the lobby’s “Free to Take” shelf.

Second Grade(Lion Class)

In this Chinese unit, we followed the texts into the scenic landscapes of Mount Lu, Mount Huang, the Stork Tower, Sun Moon Lake, and Grape Valley. The Lions class located these famous sites accurately on the map, deepening not only their geographical understanding but also their appreciation of China’s vast territory and abundant resources.

Additionally, the students immersed themselves in the local cultures of Taiwan and Xinjiang through documentaries and completed thoughtfully designed research worksheets. Now, let’s take a look at their learning achievements!

Third and Fourth & Sixth Grade(Bear & Dragen Class)

PSPE

Our PSPE class was extra exciting this week. We had the entire football field to ourselves. First, students warmed up with vital stretches that ensure we do not get injured. Students are now very knowledgeable and chose the exercises for each part of our body. We then did a lap around the full track, demonstrating knowledge of the correct position of our body prior to starting to sprint. Then we practiced taking shots on goal with a pass laid up for us (striking a moving ball first time). Finally we played a full pitch match in teams of 5.

Students had to pass the ball to an opponent before scoring. Our budding sports stars had a wonderful time!

Fourth Grade(Eagle Class)

Splitting the Bill at a Restaurant(Math)

Our math inquiry this week offered a fun yet purposeful role-play experience. Mr. Ian acted as a restaurant waiter taking the Eagles’ orders, and once students had “eaten,” we explored an authentic mathematical question: Is it cheaper or more expensive to split a bill evenly among five people compared to paying individually?

Students first calculated the total cost of all meals, divided it equally among five, and then compared that amount with their own individual orders. Through this process, they evaluated which method was more financially beneficial for them and justified their reasoning.

This inquiry not only strengthened their mathematical reasoning but also connected directly to a real-world context they will encounter in the future. Now, students are better equipped to approach similar situations with confidence and understanding.

Witnessing the children grow through inquiry and learn through play has been truly inspiring. Here’s to more wonderful stories next week! Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!
