As the holiday draws to a close, our new journey of inquiry is about to begin. As IB learners, children need to transition smoothly from the free-exploration mode of the holidays to a state of learning filled with curiosity and reflection.

Refocusing is not about a “sudden brake”, but rather a meaningful transition. This refocusing checklist, designed specifically for our IB community, will help families embrace the new semester with an IB approach. Whether your child is in the PYP or EYP years, the following suggestions are tailored to their developmental stage, supporting a smooth and successful transition.

• Return to school at 8:00 – 8:30 on March 9th. Please make necessary preparations.

•  If you need to update any contact information with the school, please contact the homeroom teacher as soon as possible.

•  Please pay attention to the information in the class group and prepare all the necessary items for the start of the new term.

01

Adjusting Daily Rhythms and Rebuilding Learning Routines

Gradual Schedule Adjustment

•  Go to bed and wake up 15-30 minutes earlier each day to gradually sync with the school schedule.

•  Avoid electronic screens for one hour before bedtime; opt for parent-child reading or meditation to relax instead.

•  Special Note for Early Years: Young children need approximately 10-12 hours of sleep. A predictable morning and evening routine will also help ease anxiety about the first day back.

• IB Connection: Discuss with your child “why regular routines are important for learning” to cultivate self-management skills.

Activating Physical Energy

• Resume daily exercise habits: jogging, swimming, ball games, or yoga; for younger children, increase outdoor playtime.

• Increase time spent exploring outdoors, observing nature’s spring changes.

• IB Connection: Encourage your child to make observations for upcoming units of inquiry like “Sharing the Planet” or “How the World Works.”

Returning to a Balanced Diet

• Reduce holiday snacks; increase intake of fruits, vegetables, and quality proteins.

• Establish regular meal times to help children’s bodies readjust to the school rhythm.

• Special Note for Early Years: Plan balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and pack nutritious snacks for school. Also, encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Starting the day with a healthy breakfast will give them the energy they need to focus and have fun at school.

02

Reviewing and Looking Ahead, Cultivating Reflection

Create a “Holiday Inquiry Achievement List”

Visualize your child’s holiday gains together (IB encourages reflection and presentation):

•  Reading Exploration: List the books read. What ideas from the favorite book were shared?

• Cultural Experiences: What places were visited? What new discoveries were made?

•  Skills Acquired: What new skills were learned? (Even just cooking a bowl of noodles or tidying a room)

• Social Interactions: Who did they spend meaningful time with?

• Special Note for Early Years: The key to a smooth back-to-school transition is to stay positive. Share your excitement with your child about returning to school, seeing friends, and learning new things. A positive attitude will help set the tone for their own feelings about school. And if they seem nervous, reassure them that it’s okay to feel that way and that school is a safe and fun place to be.

Gentle Knowledge Warm-up

• Review learning portfolios from last semester; recall the projects they are most proud of.

• Browse through the inquiry themes for the new semester.

• Special Note for Early Years: If your child has had a long break from structured learning, you might want to spend a little time at home reintroducing some fun, low-pressure activities. You can do simple activities like reading a favorite story, singing nursery rhymes, playing memory games, or practicing counting with everyday objects. These activities will help get your child’s brain back in “school mode” without feeling like it’s a chore.

Prepare the Learning Space

• Tidy the desk; create an “Inquiry Corner” with items like a globe, magnifying glass, art supplies.

• Get learning tools ready.

03

Focusing on Emotional Transition, Embodying IB Learner Profile Attributes

Engage in Family Conversations

•  Listen to your child’s hopes and worries about the new school term without judgment.

• Share your own memories of starting a new school year to build an emotional connection.

• Discuss: Which IB Learner Profile attributes do they want to develop this semester? (Inquirers, Thinkers, Communicators, Risk-takers…)

• Special Note for Early Years: Returning to school after a break can bring out a mix of emotions. Some children may experience separation anxiety, while others may feel nervous about changes in the classroom or seeing new faces. Be patient and understanding. Practice positive affirmations like “You are so brave!” or “We’ll have lots of fun today!” It’s also helpful to give them a special item to take to school—a small toy, picture, or family photo that gives them comfort during the day.

Revisiting Social Skills

• The holiday break may have meant a break from regular social activities, so now is a good time to revisit basic social skills like taking turns, sharing, and being kind to others. Encourage playdates with friends before school starts or involve your child in group activities that foster these skills. Talking about how we treat our friends with kindness and respect will help your child feel more confident socially when they return to school.

Encouraging Independence

• Primary Years: Involve your child in preparing school supplies and planning their learning schedule.

• Early Years:The Early Years are all about building independence, so encourage your child to practice little things they will need to do on their own at school, such as:Putting on their coat and shoes by themselves. Zipping up their backpack. Using the restroom independently. Cleaning up after themselves. These simple tasks can help your child feel more capable and confident when they walk into the classroom.

Set “Growth-Oriented Goals”

• Instead of “What score do you want to get?”, ask “Which concept do you want to understand more deeply?” or “What new challenge do you want to try?”

• Make goals visible; create a poster together and display it in their room.

Allow for a Buffer Period

• During the first week back, children may need time to readjust to the social and academic pace.

• If anxiety appears, encourage IB-aligned “self-expression” methods: drawing, journaling, role-playing.

• Special Note for Early Years: As the first day of school approaches, take some time to talk with your child about what to expect. While some children may be excited to return, others may feel nervous or anxious. Reassure them that school is a fun place where they will see their friends, learn new things, and have lots of exciting activities. If they’re worried about any part of school, talk through their concerns calmly and positively. For example, explain what the day will look like—arriving at school, hanging up their coat, sitting down for circle time, etc.

04

Practical Preparation Checklist

Items to Prepare for School

•  Holiday homework/inquiry project

• Stationery and water bottle

• Special Note for Early Years: Even though it’s the Early Years, please remember to gather a few essential school supplies, such as a backpack, indoor shoes, extra clothes , toothbrush, toothpaste, a plastic cup, their personal water bottle, and bedding. Don’t forget to label everything with your child’s name. Young children are just starting to learn about responsibility, and labeling their items is a great way to help them develop confidence and self-sufficiency.

Five “Don’ts” for Refocusing

Based on recommendations from educational psychology:

• Don’t slam on the “sudden brakes” — Adjust routines gradually to avoid physical resistance.

• Don’t take a “one-size-fits-all” approach — Respect your child’s wishes and discuss the refocusing plan together.

• Don’t hold a “criticism session” — Avoid blaming them for “wasting” the holiday; focus on future growth instead.

• Don’t resort to “force-feeding” — Resist excessive tutoring; protect their intrinsic motivation to learn.

• Don’t “fly the kite” and let go completely — Maintain your connection; your companionship is the best remedy for a smooth transition.

A New Semester, A New Inquiry, A New Phase of Growth

In the IB educational journey, every new semester marks the beginning of a new inquiry cycle. Regardless of your child’s age, let’s help them not to be “forced to refocus,” but to proactively recharge, meeting their learning adventures with curiosity and self-confidence.

May every IB learner in the new semester:

Remain curious, dare to inquire, and become the best version of themselves.
