Weekly |

Time slips away quietly, accompanied by laughter and joy across the campus. The students at Nanchang International School have embraced another week of growth and learning. From the little explorers in kindergarten to the future thinkers in the primary school, every moment has been illuminated by the spark of exploration and discovery. Now, let’s take a look back at this wonderful week together.

Pre-Nursery(Bunny Class)

Little Hands, Big Discoveries: Exploring Orange Through Art (Art)

In our Pre-Nursery art studio, every lesson is a sensory adventure designed to build foundational skills. Our recent focus on the color orange provided plenty of opportunities for exploration, blending process art with crucial developmental milestones.

Our young artists began by mixing their own orange paint in small bowls, using a deliberate “round, round” motion. This simple action is far more than just preparation; it’s a physical rehearsal for the clay manipulation to come, building cognitive connections and motor memory. As the children then used round sponges and orange slice stamps to create prints, they were not just making art—they were studying cause and effect, a key concept in cognitive development.

After a proud moment of cleaning their own spaces, the learning continued with clay. Having mastered the sphere (a whole orange) earlier in the week, they progressed to rolling coils and forming spiral “lollipops” with small leaves. This sequential skill-building—from sphere to coil—aligns with the constructivist theory of learning, where children build new understandings from their previous experiences.

Through this joyful, fruit-inspired series, our youngest learners are artists, but also inquirers developing fine motor control, vocabulary, and cognitive skills one colorful, hands-on lesson at a time.

Nursery(Butterfly Class)

Incredible Insects and the Letter “i”(English and Fine Motor Skills)

This week, the children reviewed the sound “i” and practiced identifying words that begin with this letter. To make learning even more fun, they explored the world of insects and used playdough to create their favorite ones.

This hands-on activity not only reinforced their understanding of the “i” sound but also helped strengthen their fine motor skills through creative play. The children had a wonderful time learning and creating!

Pre-K(Panda Class)

Little Learns, Big Steps in Literacy (English)

This week in English, Panda Class focused on recognizing and sounding out lowercase letters. The children practiced linking each letter to its sound and strengthened their writing skills through fun tracing activities.

Tracing helps children remember letter shapes while improving hand control and coordination. Through playful, hands-on learning, our Pandas are building a strong foundation for early reading and writing — and making great progress along the way!

This foundation is essential for early reading and writing development, and the students are doing an amazing job making progress through playful and engaging activities.

Kindergarten(Koala Class)

This week in Chinese class, the children of the Koala class gained a deeper understanding of family member terms! Through a fun matching game pairing illustrations with corresponding titles, they not only strengthened their grasp of Chinese character structures and meanings but also enhanced their hands-on skills.

Moreover, by carefully coloring the family figures, the children expressed their unique emotions and perceptions toward each relative. Now, let’s appreciate the Koala class’s warm and creative works together!

First Grade(Tiger Class)

Rock,Paper,Scissors — Sight Words! (Literacy)

Each Friday, Tiger Class studies sight words together in preparation for the next week’s quiz. One way they enjoy studying is by playing fun games. One game they have been particularly enjoying is called Sight Word Tug-of-War. In this game, the class is divided into two teams. To play, one team member from each team comes to the front of the class. The two students play the famous game Rock, Paper, Scissors. The winning player then must read a sight word correctly to move the middle marker closer to the end of the other team’s “rope.” The first team to reach the end of their opponent’s rope is the winner. Playing fun games like this is a great way for the students to study, gain confidence, and improve their reading skills.

Second Grade(Lion Class)

Exploring “Who We Are” —A Journey Through Culture and Customs (UOI)

This week, we began our exciting new unit, “Who We Are,” which explores the central idea that culture and customs shape the human experience. To kick things off, we had a fun and engaging activity using a magic box filled with items from around the world — including a soft lamb from New Zealand, fragrant Greek mountain tea, and a colorful coaster from the Philippines.

Students took turns guessing which countries the items came from, which teacher they might belong to, and what each item was used for. Afterwards, groups investigated the cultures of these countries more deeply, exploring their food, clothing, traditions, and daily life. It was a wonderful way to celebrate diversity, spark curiosity, and begin thinking about what makes each culture unique!

Third and Fourth Grade(Bear Class)

Learning About Author’s Purpose — P.I.E.(Literacy)

This week in class, we explored the author’s purpose — the reason why an author writes a text. We learned that every piece of writing has an intent: it might be to Persuade, Inform, or Entertain the reader. A fun and easy way to remember these three purposes is by thinking of P.I.E. — just like a delicious apple or blueberry pie!

Students did a wonderful job creating colorful posters to show what each letter stands for and explaining how authors use their writing to share ideas, facts, or stories. It was great to see everyone working creatively and confidently to demonstrate their understanding of author’s purpose. Great work, everyone!

Fourth Grade(Eagle Class)

Exploring the Building Blocks of Music:Consonance and Dissonance (Music)

Our Eagle Class students are exploring how Western classical composers use consonance and dissonance to create emotion and narrative in their music. Students began by playing and singing intervals, categorizing them by using descriptive words such as “comfortable”, “interesting”, “nice”, “sharp”, based on their own auditory perceptions.

We then listened to a piece by the Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, discussing how these musical techniques evolved during a pivotal era in Western music history. To provide a rich cultural context, we drew parallels between this period of artistic flourishing in the West and concurrent dynasties in Chinese history, examining how artistic expression develops within different cultural frameworks. This comparative approach helps students understand music not just as sound, but as a reflection of historical and cultural values.

The end of every week marks the beginning of a new journey. We celebrate every achievement our children have made this week and look forward to the many more wonderful moments they will bring in the days ahead.
