Even the scorching heat of summer cannot stop the little explorers’ steps towards the world. The kindergarten and primary school classes of our IB theme summer camp, respectively driven by curiosity about the “small world” and the “big universe”, completed a wonderful journey full of discovery and reflection.

For the little explorers in the kindergarten class, entering the insect museum is like opening a three-dimensional encyclopedia full of life’s wonders. Under the guidance of the IB theme of “Sharing the Earth”, they are no longer simple visitors but have transformed into dedicated “observers of life”.

The beetle specimens of various shapes, resembling miniature samurais, first caught their eyes. The hard elytra and peculiar horns demonstrated the wonders of nature. The live exhibition area instantly ignited a tense yet exciting atmosphere: lizards nimbly crawled through glass boxes, and children held their breath to observe their unique postures and cold scales. The dense and rhythmic steps of the centipede have sparked a heated discussion about “how many legs”. After the initial nervousness, the children, driven by deep curiosity, bravely approached to experience this strange vitality from the other side of the earth.

The children stood on tiptoe, their little fingers pointing at the display cases. Questions kept emerging like bubbles. Under the patient explanations of the staff, the slight unease brought by the unknown gradually transformed into a deep respect for the diversity of life. This insect museum trip has long transcended the realm of “seeing insects”. It allows children to confront the myriad forms of life on Earth directly, from the majestic beetles to the meandering snakes, from the cold crawling to the tiny arthropods, vividly interpreting the true meaning that every life on the “Shared Earth” deserves respect and understanding.

Meanwhile, the “future explorers” in the primary school class set their sights on the vast and boundless ocean of stars. The science and technology museum has become an excellent classroom for them to understand “how the world works” and “being in the universe and time and space”.

In the tech-savvy exhibition hall, a light touch of the fingertip on the screen instantly unfolds the magnificent picture of the solar system. Immersed in the immersive dome cinema, the elegant revolution and rotation of planets seem within reach, and the grand cosmic picture triggers a series of “whys” – the mysteries of gravity, light years, and black holes sprout amid exclamations of amazement.

In the simulated space capsule, it feels as if one has truly embarked on an interstellar journey. The children operated the simplified dashboard and joystick with their own hands, striving to “adjust the track”, their eyes fixed on the brilliant stars flowing outside the “porthole” and the huge planets slowly passing by. The sense of smallness in the vast universe and the excitement of exploring the unknown interwoved together, an experience that no textbook could replace. Some children also tried to simulate a rocket launch pad, experiencing the vibration and roar when it was ignited. These playable and operable simulation projects allow children not only to observe the universe but to truly “play with” it. Through hands-on operation and role-playing, they transform abstract concepts of the universe into personal experiences. This immersive interstellar journey ignites not only the yearning for distant stars, but also the passion for exploring the scientific principles that drive all this, as well as profound reflections on humanity’s position and responsibility in the vast universe.

While the children in the kindergarten class were holding their breath for a grasshopper, the students in the primary school class were marveling at the rings of Saturn under the dome of the science and technology museum. One bends down close to the earth, the other raises his head and looks up at the starry sky. Although perspectives may vary in size, what runs through them is the unextinguished curiosity, the courage to ask questions, and the initiative to actively explore of IB learners. From the microscopic world of insects to the macroscopic scale of the universe, the children in the summer camp measure the breadth and depth of the world in different ways and experience the vivid pulse of knowledge in real situations.
